110 years has passed since the 1916 Easter Rising and ten years since GPO Museum opened its doors as Dublin’s first museum dedicated purely to that event and Ireland’s revolutionary period more broadly. However, the ways in which we commemorate those events, and who we commemorate, have changed drastically in the century since. Questions over how to approach remembering and commemorating the foundation of the state have received different answers at different points in time.
Join GPO Museum’s team of seasoned tour guides as they present and reflect on how they approach researching and communicating these complex events in the present. A timetable of talks is below:
10:30AM – How the Irish state commemorated the Easter Rising in the early years of Irish independence.
11:15AM – Those involved in the fight for Irish independence who were left out of the mainstream narratives chronicling and commemorating those events.
12:00PM – Irish-Polish connections in the revolutionary period and how the Irish revolution can be interpreted in the context of the revolutionary struggles of other nations.
12:45PM – How the Irish state commemorated the Easter Rising in the early years of Irish independence.
