About Us

Our Story

The award-winning GPO Museum, originally known as ‘GPO Witness History’, was officially opened by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, on Friday March 25th 2016, marking the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising. It was one of the flagship projects as part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary programme.

This is a culturally significant project in one of Dublin’s most iconic buildings and it was created by An Post with state support. It takes the form of an interactive and immersive experience, telling the story of the 1916 Easter Rising and modern Irish history.

GPO Building Exterior

The Significance of the GPO

The General Post Office (GPO) is the centrepiece of Dublin’s grandest ceremonial street – O’Connell Street. The GPO, which opened in 1818, was designed by Francis Johnston who wanted to build a handsome, distinguished building that would not only cater for postal business and customers, but would also add to Dublin’s architectural beauty, emphasising the important role the Post Office played in Irish life.

The GPO was the communications hub of Ireland and headquarters of the men and women who took part in the 1916 Easter Rising. The historic and tumultuous Easter Rising set in motion an unstoppable chain of events which would ultimately lead to the creation of the Irish Republic. The building was destroyed by fire during the Easter Rising and the rebuilt and expanded building was officially re-opened in July 1929 by William T. Cosgrave.

The building continues to hold a unique place in Irish hearts, it remains a place of business, public service, remembrance and pageantry.
