Celebrate International Museum Day at GPO Museum with a special guided tour exploring the ways in which museums connect us with our history, providing a route to understanding events and people from the past.
Museums are the most direct way to learn about and understand the past. This creates unique opportunities and challenges when exploring a complex history and making it accessible for all ages and levels of knowledge. Using the creation of GPO Museum and its exhibits, this special guided tour will demonstrate the tools and methods employed in museums to ensure everyone can connect to the past and the people who lived in it, no matter what your previous knowledge might be!
The tour will be followed by a short talk discussing how museums must balance condensing complex subjects into widely accessible topics while being accurate to the past’s events and recognising individuals can have their own ideas of what is true. In this way museums endeavour to ensure that objectivity is maintained and the perspectives of all involved are respected.
The event in total will last approximately one hour and 15 minutes, with fifty-five minutes allocated for the tour and twenty minutes for the talk.
Patrons are welcome to enjoy our exhibition at their own leisure after the tour. There are plenty of artefacts, interactive screens, and even a film to explore!
