The name of Éamon de Valera is one synonymous with twentieth-century Ireland. Join us at the GPO Museum as we discuss de Valera’s life and legacy on the fiftieth anniversary of his death. Following a childhood of quality engagement with study and sport, but also of abject poverty and separation from his mother, the would-be mathematics teacher made his foray into Irish nationalist politics when he joined the paramilitary Irish Volunteers in 1913.

From then on, his life and career took him on a path that led to leadership of the Irish revolution, head of government for a collective period of more than twenty years, and two terms in Áras an Uachtaráin. While a curriculum vitae such as this would be expected to guarantee one a podium place in recorded history, the life and legacy of Éamon de Valera is not so simple and he remains one of modern Irish history’s most enigmatic figures. But why?

This guided tour will delve into the life of Éamon de Valera, from his rural upbringing in Limerick, to his experiences in the 1916 Rising, his terms in Leinster House and beyond. An opportunity to assess the impact of Éamon de Valera’s life and career on the development of modern Ireland, this tour will also provide a chance to discuss how his image in popular memory has developed since his death – and how it might develop going forward.
