Join us at the GPO Museum for this special tour as we remember those involved in World War 1.

In September 1914 Europe went over the precipice and war was declared. The people of the island of Ireland were faced with stark choices; join the war effort and support the British Empire, or take the opportunity the war provided to fight for the Ireland they wanted.

For some, signing up for the war effort as soldiers, nurses or factory workers enabled them to financially support their families. For others, signing up presented an exciting opportunity for adventure and to see the world. Some were convinced to help save other small nations, like Belgium. Meanwhile, around 50,000 Irishmen were already members of various regiments in the British armed forces around the world. In Ireland armed groups had recently formed in support and opposition to the proposed, but now postponed, Home Rule parliament in Dublin. The Irish Volunteers swore to defend Home Rule; the Ulster Volunteers swore to prevent its implementation in Ulster. The question for these homemade soldiers was would they stay in Ireland, or would they go to Europe, and what would that mean for them and Ireland’s future.

Join us at the GPO Museum as your guide tells the stories of those Irishmen and women who participated in World War 1, both their actions during the war and their lives afterwards. The effect and role the Irish Revolution had on these individuals and how they are remembered today, not just in Ireland but in the countries they fought in across Europe.

Booking is essential, as availability is limited. This specially researched tour will last approximately 1 hour and patrons are welcome to enjoy our exhibition at their own leisure after the tour. There are plenty of artefacts, interactive screens, and even a film to explore!
